John Ashworth died in a car accident in Forton Road, Gosport, Hampshire, on 20 December 1964.
According to the Birmingham Daily Post of 21 December 1964: “Two men were killed when their car crashed into a lamp standard at Gosport, Hampshire, late on Saturday and burst into flames. Three passengers, including a girl, escaped from the blazing vehicle. The dead men, ratings from HMS Dolphin, the submarine base, were: John Michael Whitmore (q.v.), a cook, of Cheadle Road, Stoke-on-Trent, and John Fairbairn Ashworth, a mechanical engineer, of Greenhill, Coalville, Leicestershire.”
