Albert Ayers was born at Killingholme, Lincolnshire on 11 September 1885. He joined the Royal Navy in 1902 and served in HM Ships NORTHAMPTON, CALLIOPE, RUSSELL and QUEEN before joining submarines in 1910. He married Martha Williams in 1908 by whom he had a daughter, Martha Gladys Ayers. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 11.
