Ernest Bastard was born on 22 October 1884, the son of Ernest Bastard of Torquay, Devon. He married Lilian Frances Taylor on 3 August 1908 and lived at St Marychurch, Devon. He joined the Royal Navy on 22 October 1902 and was awarded the DSM on 30 October 1917 according to the London Gazette ‘…in recognition of their services in submarines in enemy waters.’ He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 20 and on the war memorial at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, St Marychurch, Devon.
