Thomas Berriman was born on 28 April 1884 at Devonport, Devon. He was the son of Thomas and Rose Berriman of Princes Street, Devonport. He joined the Royal Navy on 20 March 1901 and before K17 served in the cruiser HMS PROMETHEUS and the battleship HMS ERIN where he saw action at the Battle of Jutland. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial Panel 27.
