John Blondel was born in Lancaster on 12 August 1894, the son of William and Annie Blondel of Aldrens Lane, Lancaster and was educated at Bowerham School. Before joining the Royal Navy he was employed at Moor Lane Mills. Prior to his submarine service, he saw action at the Battle of Jutland serving in the battleship HMS BARHAM.
He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
