Harry Caress was born in Chelsea on 16 May 1895, the son of Henry and Madge Caress of Waltham Green, Fulham, London. Before joining submarines he served at the Battle of Jutland in the battleship HMS BENBOW. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 29. A collection of his letters to his sweetheart, Daisy Plumridge, is held at the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
