James Derrick Choularton was born in Manchester, Lancashire on 20 November 1918, the son of James and Bertha Choularton (nee Powell) of Platt Street, Moss Side, Manchester. He was a member of the crew of Submarine HMS THRASHER. THRASHER conducted a refit at Cammell Lairds shipyard in Birkenhead from 9 February 1944 and was undocked on 12 May 1944 for post refit trials.
James Choularton is reported to have been accidentally drowned in Wallasey Dock at Birkenhead in Cheshire on 26 May 1944. Jame Choularton is buried in the Birkenhead (Landican) Cemetery, Non-conformist Section 6, Coll, Grave No C4.
