John Codrington was born on 23 June 1884 at Sheerness Kent, the son of Rear Admiral William Codrington and Mary Auber Codrington (née Leach).  He joined the Royal Navy in 1899 and was appointed to HMS BONAVENTURE in 1907 for submarines. Before L5 he commanded the submarines C38, H3 and K14.  He died at the Royal Naval Hospital Plymouth from pneumonia related to Spanish influenza.  He was a holder of the  Italian Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus. He is buried in Ford Park cemetery at Pennycomequick, Plymouth.
