John Dinnis was born on 23 April 1886 at Smethwick, Staffordshire, the son of John and Emily Dinnis, of Harborne, Birmingham. He married Violet Elizabeth Rudland in 1909; they lived in Connaught Rd., Luton, Chatham. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 23
