Gordon Foote was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on 8 March 1922, the son of George Henry and Louisa Olive Foote (née Mills). He joined the Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer Apprentice. After completion of his five-year apprenticeship, he saw service during WWII and, by December 1945, he had been rated Engine Room Artificer Third Class and had been ‘Mentioned in Despatches’ – see Supplement to the London Gazette No. 37380 dated 11 December 1945.

He was promoted to Commissioned Engineer on 1 August 1952 and, later to Engineer Sub Lieutenant. On 4 March 1955 he was appointed to HMS SUBTLE as the Engineer, followed by HMS ARTEMIS as the Engineer. He was further promoted to Engineer Lieutenant on 1 October 1958 and was appointed to HMS TRUNCHEON as the Engineer in February 1960. Gordon Foote was next appointed to HMS ODIN as the Engineer on commissioning at Birkenhead on 3 May 1962. He next served in HMS VICTORY and then in the frigate HMS LYNX before returning to HMS VICTORY. He then returned to submarines with an appointment to HMS DOLPHIN.

Gordon Foote is reported to have died on 16 October 1971. The circumstances of his death are not yet established. He was the husband of Jean M Foote (née Small) and they had been married in Portsmouth in October 1959.
