Francis Hammond was born in Birmingham on 3 September 1894, the son of Joseph and Ellen Hammond, of Spring Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham. Before serving in HMS K17 he saw action at the Battle of Jutland in the battleship HMS CENTURION.
His body was recovered from the wreck and is buried in Birmingham (Handsworth) Cemetery.
