George Hawkins was born in Southwark on 11 August 1891, the son of George and Ellen Hawkins. He joined the Royal Navy at Portsmouth on 11 August 1911 and volunteered for submarine service in 1914.
In 1916 he married Violet Hawkins; they lived at Falmouth, Cornwall and had a son, George.
George Hawkins is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
