Able Seaman
Edward Thomas
"Ashi"
JONES
Royal Navy
22
Edward Jones was born in Ladywood in Birmingham, Warwickshire, on 21 September 1920, the second eldest child (and second son) of William Thomas Jones and Nancy Jones (née Cutler). The 1921 Census listed William Thomas Jones as a motor engineer of 281, Heath Street at home with his wife, Nancy, and sons William Frank and Edward Thomas. Later there were also four sisters one of whom (Dorothy Mary) died young. The others were Margaret Nancy, Betty Eileen and Nanette Lily. When the 1939 Register was compiled Edward was at home with his parents (his father was now a shopkeeper – tobacconist & confectioner) and with his sister, Margaret at 7, Bourneville Lane, Birmingham. Edward Thomas Jones was listed as a sheet metal worker with Austin Aero.
It is not known when Edward joined the Royal Navy or submarines but, in July 1943 he was an Able Seaman serving in HMS PARTHIAN in the Mediterranean. He died when PARTHIAN was lost, probably by hitting a mine in the Adriatic, on about 7 August 1943.
Edward Jones was the husband of Elizabeth Martha (Betty) Jones (née Salter) whom he had married in July 1941. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Panel 75 Column 1.

I lost my dad when Parthian went missing. He never made it back to meet me. It would be interesting to know if there are any other sons or daughters or indeed any relatives still about. Would be good to talk about Peanut and its crew. Ted
