Engineer Lieutenant
Arthur Ernest
LANE
Royal Navy
29
Arthur Lane was born 11 May 1887 at Devonport, the son of Engineer Rear Admiral Charles Lane and his wife Mary Louise. He joined the Royal Navy in 1903 and studied at Keyham Engineering College, passing out in 1907. He then attended the Royal Naval College Greenwich before serving on the China Station in the cruisers HMS ANDROMEDA and HMS BEDFORD.
On 1 June 1911 he married Winifred Hooper Stribling and had two daughters, Jean, who died shortly after birth and Margaret.
He volunteered for submarines and following training at HMS DOLPHIN joined HMS K13 in build at Govan in 1916. It appeared that he attempted to escape from the stricken submarine as his body was not found until four months later when it washed ashore in the Clyde. He was interred at Faslane Cemetery on 17 May 1917.
