Edgar Lloyd was born in Pontypridd, Glamorgan on 24 October 1924, the son of Harold Lloyd and Jessie Ceridwen Lloyd (née Evans). He was a Leading Electricians Mate who died in an explosion onboard HMS XE9.
HMS XE9 was alongside the cruiser HMS BIRMINGHAM at Fountain Lake Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard preparing for public displays of diving and surfacing over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend. Edgar was overseeing the charging of the submarine’s batteries prior to the displays and was working alone in the submarine when an explosion took place. He was rescued from the submarine by Ordinary Seaman Holden and Leading Stoker Francis – both of HMS BIRMINGHAM. He was taken to the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar but died shortly after admission from the injuries he received in the explosion and from shock.
