David Mackay was born in Glasgow on 23 September 1924, the son of David James Mackay and Jane Mackay (née McIntosh). When he joined the Royal Navy he seems to have quoted his date of birth as 23 September 1923, which made him appear one year older.
He is reported to have died on 4 June 1944 from wounds received in a surface gun action in which two others were wounded. HMS SICKLE was sunk with all hands twelve days later on 16 June 1944.
David Mackay is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial on Panel 87 Column 1.
