Charles Matthews was born in Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland in 1893 (not 1891 as stated on his Service Record) and joined the British Navy in 1913. He served in HMS IRON DUKE and was at Jutland. 

After Jutland, he transferred into submarines and served in E35, and took part in the sinking of the German submarine U154 in May 1918 (for which he received a “prize bounty” of £13 – 12 – 10p). He also served briefly in L7 and L15. He moved to L24 in 1922 and was lost when L24 was sunk off Portland in a collision with HMS RESOLUTION. He was an ERA 2nd Class at the time of his death.
