Edward Newing was born at Ramsgate, Kent on 30 September 1893, one of four children of Edward George and Mary Ann Newing. Before joining the Royal Navy in 1914 he was a carter and farm labourer.
After joining submarines in 1917 he served in HMS K11, G4, M3 and L24.
