Alfred Oakwell was born on 22 April 1886 at Sheerness, Kent, the son of Edward and Isabella Oakwell of Gillingham. He joined the Royal Navy on 19 November 1911, before which he was a boilermaker. He was a member of the De Shurland No 1089 (East Kent) Masonic Lodge. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 17 and on page 131 of the Masonic Roll of Honour 1914-18.
