Joseph Stennett was born at Sleaford, Lincolshire on  12 August 1895, the son of William and Alice Stennett, of Horbling, Billingborough, Linconshire.  After working as a baker’s assistant he joined the Royal Navy in July 1914 and prior to joining submarines in December 1916 he served in the cruiser HMS INCONSTANT and saw action at the Battle of Jutland in May of that year.  He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 30 and on the war memorial at Horbling.
