Arthur Uren was born in Deal, Kent on 21 December 1904, the son of Thomas Robins and Sara Ann Uren (née Rundle). He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Artificer on 16 February 1920. He completed his five-year Engine Room Artificer apprenticeship and then served in the battleship HMS RESOLUTION from 8 August 1924 to 20 October 1925.
He joined submarines as an Engine Room Artificer Third Class at HMS DOLPHIN on 1 December 1925 and then was drafted to HMS H30 on 10 February 1926, followed by HMS L23 on 29 December 1928 and HMS SEVERN on 1 July 1934. He was next drafted to HMS PORPOISE on 25 August 1937. Chief Engine Room Artificer Second Class Arthur Uren was promoted to Acting Warrant Engineer on 1 April 1939. On 15 October 1939 he was appointed to HMS OSIRIS as Engineering Officer. He was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MEDWAY at Alexandria to date 31 October 1941. He returned home on 14 February 1942 with an appointment to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS AMBROSE at Dundee for Submarine Staff Duties.
He was then appointed to HMS STONEHENGE, completing – and as Engineering Officer on commissioning on 15 February 1943. After work up, STONEHENGE was sent to join the Submarine Depot Ship HMS ADAMANT at Trincomalee, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). On 12 Feb 1944, STONEHENGE destroyed a Japanese Flying Boat. On 22 March 1944, STONEHENGE was lost with all hands, cause unknown, off the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean.
Arthur Uren was the husband of Kathleen Alice Uren, and he is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial on Panel No. 81 Column No. 1.
