As a relatively senior artificer, Ray Kimber had only recently transferred from General Service to submarines, and was still undergoing training when he was killed in a battery explosion in HMS ALLIANCE.  Fourteen crew members were also injured.

He was a very popular man and left a wife, Doreen and two young children, Robert and Alison.  He is buried in the Royal Naval Cemetery, Clayhall Road, Gosport.
