Alfred Hall was born in Durham on 9 October 1892, the son of Alfred Atkinson Hall and Catherine Clark Hall. He served an apprenticeship from 23 July 1909 to 10 November 1912 in the SS KING ARTHUR & SS KING MALCOLM. He served in the SS VOLGA from 30 November 1912 to 20 April 1914 and, after gaining his Mate’s Ticket served in SS CAMBRIAN KING and SS TITIAN. From 15 December 1915 to 24 March 1916, he served as Second Mate in the Oil Tanker SS ROCKLIGHT.
He joined the Royal Navy on 7 May 1916 as a Temporary Sub Lieutenant, RNR and on 9 June 1916 appointed to the yacht HMS LADY BLANCHE. This was followed by an appointment to the yacht HMS ZARA on 7 October 1916. Alfred Hall was promoted Acting Lieutenant, RNR on 31 May 1917 and confirmed as Lieutenant, RNR on 14 September 1917.
He was appointed to HMS D3 as Navigating Officer on 1 February 1918. D3 was lost with all hands in the English Channel on 12 March 1918, having been bombed and sunk (in error) by the French Airship AT-O.
Alfred Hall was the husband of Helena Nash Laurie Hall, née Buckner. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Panel No. 30.
