George was born 0n the 10 November 1899 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, the son of  blacksmith Thomas and his wife Amy Louisa (née Dredge) who had married in the village of Winton in early 1899. After George there quickly followed a brother Frederick (1901), sisters Hilda Amy (1902) and Ellen Matilda (1904). Sadly the Mother, Amy  Louisa, passed away just after the birth of Ellen and George moved in with her bereaved parents (his grandparents) in New Sarum, Wiltshire.  The Father, Thomas, remarried in 1906 to Edith Alice (née Musselwhite) and lived at 13 George Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire, as of the 1911 census.

George Sanger joined the Royal Navy on 4 August 1915 when he entered HMS VICTORY 1 in Portsmouth as a Boy Second Class for 12 weeks basic training. A draft to Devonport to join the Boy Training Ship HMS IMPREGNABLE followed on 29 October 1915 and he was rated Boy Tel on 15 January 1916. On 25 February he moved to Shotley, Suffolk, and entered the gates of HMS GANGES to complete branch training. A draft to HMS MAIDSTONE on the 12 May took him to Harwich, initially still under training then as ship’s company. On 4 August 1916 he undertook a long journey North to Join HMS VULCAN based in the Firth of Forth and was rated up to Ord Tel on 10 April 1917. Five days later he was drafted to HMS PLATYPUS (for HMS D3) and a flotilla move to the North coast of Ireland. D3 was one of the D class submarines transferred to HMS DOLPHIN on the 11 December 1917 for patrol areas in the English Channel.

On the 12 March 1918, just off the French port of Dieppe, D3 was mistakenly identified as a German submarine and attacked from the air by a French airship that dropped 6 depth bombs on her. D6 sank very quickly and none of her 29 man crew managed to escape.
