Ernest Pilkington was born in Bolton, Lancashire on 1 October 1888, the son of James and Mary-Ann Pilkington.  Before joining the Royal Navy he worked as a blacksmith.  Before submarine service he served in the light cruiser HMS GALATEA in which he saw action at the battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916.

Ernest Pilkington married Helen Gracie Anderson on 1 October 1917.  Their son was born on 19 August 1918 and named after his late father.  He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
