Ernest Lampard was born on the 2 April 1894 the third child of William John and Martha (née Simper) Lampard. With his elder sister Winifred (1891), brother Alex (1893) and two younger brothers Edward (1901) and Herbert (1903), all were born and raised in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Ernest entered the Royal Navy on 17 April 1912 when he joined HMS PEMBROKE ll at Chatham and, due to his age (18 years and 2 weeks), he was classed as a Sto 2c. On 17 September 1912 he was drafted to HMS NATAL and on 4 April 1913 he was rated Sto 1c, leaving on 28 May 1914 for a return and short visit to PEMBROKE. On the 8 June he was drafted to HMS BONAVENTURE, a Submarine Depot Ship, in Portsmouth harbour and on to HMS DOLPHIN on 30 June for submarine training.  This he completed on the 28 August 1914 when he joined HMS MAIDSTONE based in Harwich for HMS E10.

E10 disappeared while on patrol in the North Sea around 18 January 1915. Information from a much later date indicated she had struck a mine and sank with the loss of all of the 31 crew.

Stoker 1 class, Ernest William Lampard, Svc No. K 14536 had “Crossed The Bar” with 30 of his shipmates.
