Herbert Pearce was born at Ongar, Essex on 24 March 1892; before joining the Royal Navy he was a bricklayer.  He entered the submarine service on 17 April 1916 at HMS DOLPHIN and lost his life when the Norwegian steamer SS Glena foundered in a gale 140 miles North West of Cape Finisterre while on passage from Melilla in Spain to Glasgow; Pearce had been returning from Gibraltar.  He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial and on the North Queensferry War Memorial.
