George Back was born on 21 June 1899, the son of Charles Back, a milkman, and Emily Back of Chelsea, London. He was drowned while escaping from the wreck of HMS G11 which grounded at Howick, Northumberland. He is buried at the Longhoughton (St Peter) churchyard, Northumberland and commemorated on the Draycott Avenue Memorial in Chelsea.
