Frank Allerton was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk on 26 March 1891, the son of Charles H Allerton and Florence E Manthorpe. On 23 March 1909 Frank Hilton signed Indentures with the Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd. for three years as an Apprentice. He served in the barques JUTEOPOLIS, IROQUOIS, TONOWANDA, KENNABEC, RADIANT, BRILLIANT and DELEWARE. Having gained his Mate’s ticket, he served as third Mate from 28 March 1913 to 1 September 1914 in SS POTOMAC and SS GENOESE.
Frank Allerton joined the Royal Navy as a Temporary Sub Lieutenant, RNR on 6 August 1915, and was appointed to the cruiser HMS TERRIBLE on 16 September 1915 for passage to Malta where he joined HMS EUROPA. An appointment to the cruiser HMS GRAFTON followed on 31 October 1915 with a further appointment to the cruiser HMS St. GEORGE on 6 December 1915 at Salonika.
Frank Allerton was promoted Acting Lieutenant, RNR on 3 August 1916 and appointed to HMS E25 as Navigating Officer on 23 October 1916. Promotion to Lieutenant, RNR came on 30 July 1917. Allerton joined HMS G7 as Navigating Officer on 15 March 1918. G7 sailed for a patrol in the North Sea in October 1918. A message was received from the submarine on 23 October 1918, but no further contact was made. G7 was declared lost with all hands from unknown causes on 1 November 1918.
Frank Allerton listed his Next of Kin as his mother at 98, London Road, Ipswich. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Panel No. 30.
