John Duffy was born on 30 July 1893 at Finsbury, London. He was the son of Clara Duffy of George Square, Hoxton, London.

At the Battle of Jutland on 31 May – 1 June 1916, he served in the cruiser HMS FEARLESS, part of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla, providing screening duties to the 5th Battle Squadron.

He was lost with all hands in HMS G7 on 1 November 1918.

He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial and the Memorial Wall at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum.
