Alfred Crummack was born on 11 August 1892 at York, the son of  Samuel and Alice Crummack of Fulford, Yorkshire.  In 1914 he was serving as a 3rd Mate in Ellerman Lines. He joined the RNR as a Temporary Sub Lieutenant on 10 February at HMS EXCELLENT. His first sea appointments were in the armed merchant cruisers ALSATIAN and PATRIA.

After promotion to Lieutenant in February 1916, he was appointed to the submarine depot ship HMS ALECTO  ‘..for submarine H10 as Navigating Officer’ on 1 February 1917.

He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 30 and on the war memorial in the churchyard of St Oswald’s, Fulford.
