Herbert Sargent was born in Portsmouth on 14 June 1893, the son of Maurice and Martha Sargent.  He joined the Royal Navy on 18 October 1910 at HMS GANGES as a Boy Seaman.  He was advanced to Able Seaman on 3 October 1912.  Prior to his submarine service he served in the battleship HMS JUPITER and the destroyer HMS SPITEFUL.  He joined submarines at HMS DOLPHIN on 30 November 1917 and on completion of his training was drafted to the depot ship HMS ALECTO before joining HMS H10.

He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
