Herbert Antram was born on 8 April 1892 in Liverpool.  He was the son of the Rev. C. E. P. and Mrs Alice Antram of the Vicarage, Blean, Canterbury, and was educated at Guildford Grammar School. He joined the merchant service and was appointed a Temporary Sub Lieutenant RNR on 3 August 1915 and served in the armed merchant cruiser HMS OTWAY.  He was appointed to the submarine depot ship HMS TITANIA on 1 December 1916 ‘… for Submarine J3 as Navigating Officer.’  He was promoted to Lieutenant on 27 July 1917 and appointed to HMS K17 as Navigating Officer on 1 September 1917.  He was the husband of Marjorie Antram (née Lester) of Longport House Canterbury.  Their daughter Monica was born on 3 April 1918.

He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 30.
