Harold Bear was born at Ramsgate, Kent on 15 October 1897, the sixth of seven children of Walter and Mary Bear and a worshipper at Mount Zion Baptist Chapel. His brother, Leading Telegraphist John Victor Bear was lost when HMS HAMPSHIRE struck a mine near Scapa Flow on 6 June 1916.  Harold was washed overboard from HMS G2 two years later.

He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
