Geoffrey Stuart was born in Thayetmyo, Upper Burma, on 27 February 1921, the son of James Arthur Penrhyn Stuart (Imperial Indian Police) and Norah Stuart, later of Alverstoke Hampshire. He was educated at the Imperial Service College in Windsor, Berkshire.
He joined the Royal Navy as a Special Entry Cadet in HMS VINDICTIVE on 1 September 1938. He served in the cruiser HMS BIRMINGHAM from 1 September 1939 to August 1940 and then in the destroyer HMS WATCHMAN from 6 September to December 1940, rejoining HMS BIRMINGHAM on 9 December 1940. From 5 May1941 to June 1941 he was taking promotion courses in HMS VICTORY at Portsmouth.
He next joined HMS DOLPHIN ‘for the Submarine Course’ on 18 September 1941 before being appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MEDWAY ‘for Submarine HMS PARTHIAN as Navigating Officer – refitting in the USA’ on 29 November 1941.
On 1 April 1943 Geoffrey Stuart was appointed toHMS P555 as the First Lieutenant and, on 21 June 1943 he was appointed to HMS STORM as First Lieutenant, standing by whilst completing at Cammell Lairds Yard in Birkenhead. On 28 January 1944 he was appointed to HMS TAKU as the First Lieutenant.
Lieutenant Geoffrey Stuart of Birch Tree Cottage, died in an accident at Cold Ash, Newbury, Berkshire on 14 April 1944 whilst on leave. He is buried in the Speen (St. Mary) Churchyard, Cold Ash, in Plot N, Row 3, Grave 58.
Geoffrey Stuart had been married at Speen Church, Newbury, Berkshire to Isobel Frances Mary Newbold – second daughter of Rev. & Mrs A H D Newbold, of Speen Vicarage, Newbury. It is understood that his wife died in the same accident.
