Now that we have confirmation that the submarine wreckage found a few months ago is indeed HMS Trooper, can we look forward to the families of those who perished receiving official notification from the Royal Navy and whether they are planning to hold some form of remembrance.
I am the son of Peter born in April 1943 . Trooper left the Clyde in autumn 1942 so he was aware of my birth although he never met me.
Peter was born and bred in Banff and served his time as a watchmaker/jeweller in his father’s business before joining the Navy in around 1935. He was a particularly good sportsman and excelled in football having played with a number of local teams. In June 1942 he married my mother, Nan Donald a farmer’s daughter and Queens nurse but only some 4 months later he set off on Trooper never to return.
Trooper’s demise was always a mystery to the family and I am particularly happy to eventually have a conclusion to her final resting place and it would be my wish that I might be able to visit the site before I am too old. I will send on photos of Peter at a later date.
