William “Taff” Jones was born on 15 June 1949.  He was a very popular Able Seaman UC3.  He served in HMS COURAGEOUS and was subsequently drafted to HMS WARSPITE in refit. He had been with her about six months when, at Helensburgh, he had been drinking with some of his mates and returned to HMS NEPTUNE to his mess inboard in a happy frame of mind. Following some mix-up with ID cards when they entered the Base, Jones was for some reason placed in cells for the night. The cell sentry, discovered him later hanging by his shirt from one of the bars in the cell window.

He died leaving a wife and a young child and was buried at Ulverston.
