Andrew Cross was born in Hove, Sussex on 31 May 1950. It is not established when he joined the Royal Navy but he was promoted to Lieutenant (E) (WESM) on 1 March 1975 and was serving in the aircraft carrier HMS HERMES in 1977.

He then served in HMS NEPTUNE in 1978 and joined HMS PORPOISE as the WEO in 1979 before returning to HMS NEPTUNE in 1981.  He was then at the Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon from 1982 to 1984 where he was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander (E) (WESM) on 1 March 1983,  He again returned to HMS NEPTUNE in 1985.  He was next appointed to the Resolution Class submarine HMS REVENGE in 1986.

Andrew Cross of 14, Straid-a-Cnoc, Clynder, Argyll & Bute sadly took his own life on 17 October 1986.
