James Simpson was born on 26 August 1975. He joined the Royal Navy in January 2000, starting his career as a Warfare officer but later changing to Marine Engineering and joining submarines.
He served on the Staff of Flag Officer Submarines in 2001, in HMS SULTAN (2002), HMS VICTORIOUS (2003), HMS VANGUARD (2004 to 2007), HMS VIGILANT (2008), HMS VANGUARD again in 2010, on the Staff of Flag Officer Sea Training from 2011 to 2014. He impressively achieved the rank of Captain in just over 18 years from joining the Royal Navy, and was appointed to the Submarine Delivery Agency Bristol in 2019.
Jim tragically took his own life on 1 July 2020. He is buried in St Swithuns Churchyard, Cheswardine, Shropshire.
A fund, “HELP – Jim’s Story“, has been set up to provide funds to raise awareness of issues surrounding military mental health.

Often remembered.
Jim came ashore on my leaving run from FOST. I was given a pewter tankard which he asked to examine more closely. I passed it to him and he promptly smashed it onto the table installing a significant dent. He passed it back and said “whenever you see that dent you’ll think of me”. He was right.
