Michael ALSOP died following a 30ft free ascent in the Submarine Escape Training Tank, according to a report in the Birmingham Post dated 22 September 1966.  He was undergoing normal escape training. He ascended from the 30ft stage and collapsed. He was taken immediately to a recompression chamber, but died despite artificial respiration.

A Naval spokesman said: “The circumstances leading to this accident are quite different from those when Lt Cdr Cudworth (q.v.) lost his life in the SETT, two weeks before, on 9 September 1966.
