James Bellamy was born on 7 November 1882 at Bethnal Green.  Prior to joining the Royal Navy on 7 May 1901 he was employed as a fishmonger.  He entered the submarine service on 21 September 1911.  He died by his own hand on 25 September 1918 – A court of inquiry concluded that he shot himself while of unsound mind.

He left a widow, Janet Bellamy of Calton, Glasgow and is buried at the Bari War Cemetery.
