Patrick Brownrigg was born in Haslemere in Surrey in 1914, the youngest of the three sons and a daughter of Annesley Harold Brownrigg A.R.I.B.A. (an architect) and Aileen Maude Brownrigg (née Fitzgerald). Patrick was baptised in the Church of St Bartholomew, Haslemere on 18 September 1914. He was educated at Fernden School, Haslemere and at All Hallows.
He was appointed to Probationary Lieutenant, Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve on 10 June 1939 and was attached to the London Division. He was then appointed to the ‘Hunt’ Class Minesweeper HMS SUTTON on 19 August 1939. In October 1939 HMS SUTTON was part of the escort for a convoy to Gibraltar after which the ship proceeded to Malta. He was next appointed to HMS FELIXSTOWE which commissioned in July 1941 for minesweeping duties and he was ‘Mentioned in Despatches’ for courage, skill and endurance while minesweeping in dangerous waters – see London Gazette dated 31 March 1942.
He then volunteered for Special Service duties and died in a diving accident whilst training as a Charioteer in Horsea Island Lake at Portsmouth on 6 May 1942.
Patrick Brownrigg of Stanemore, Pirbright, Surrey was buried in the Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery, Clayhall, Gosport, Hants in Grave No. G. 10. 2. He is also commemorated on a War Memorial in the Church at Pirbright in Surrey and on the 12th Flotilla memorial at Kylesku.
