Edward Carre was born on 16 February 1889, the son of Lieutenant Henry Charles Carre, Royal Navy, & Mrs Emily Georgina Francis Carre of Western House, Fareham, Hants, He joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet in January 1903.

His first known submarine appointment was to command HMS C22 in August 1913 as a Lieutenant. He was still in command of C22 in December 1914. Carre was next appointed to E47 in command in August 1916.

E47 was on patrol in the North Sea, when the submarine was lost, cause unknown, on 20 August 1917. There were no survivors.

Edward Carre is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval War Memorial on Panel No 24.
