Alec Carrie was born in Highbury, London, on 2 March 1895, the son of George Carrie (a stockbroker’s agent) and Helen Kempt Carrie (née Bissett) of Wallington, Surrey. He joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet at HMS BRITANNIA on 15 January 1908, was promoted to Midshipman on 15 September 1912 and was appointed to the battleship HMS BELLEROPHON.
He was promoted to Acting Sub Lieutenant on 15 September 1914 and was confirmed Sub Lieutenant on 15th May 1915. Alec Carrie was appointed to the Destroyer HMS KALE on 2nd June 1915. A volunteer for service in submarines, he joined HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarine Training’ on 1 November 1915 and then the Submarine Depot Ship HMS BONAVENTURE ‘for Submarines’ on 16 December 1915 followed by ‘for Submarine C10 as First Lieutenant’ in February 1916. Next came an appointment to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MAIDSTONE ‘for Submarine E44 as First Lieutenant’ to date 1 July 1916. He was promoted Acting Lieutenant on 15 November 1916 and, on 13 December 1917 he was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS THAMES at Portsmouth ‘for the Periscope Course’.
His date of joining submarines is not established but, in February 1916, he was appointed to HMS C10 as First Lieutenant. This was followed by an appointment as First Lieutenant of E44 in September 1916. He was promoted Acting Lieutenant on 15 November 1916 and, on 13 December 1917, he was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS THAMES at Portsmouth ‘for the Periscope Course’.
His first command came in January 1918, when he was appointed to HMS C21. This was followed by commands of HMS E29 and L5, the latter of which he took to Hong Kong in October 1920. He returned home with an appointment to the battle cruiser HMS HOOD in July 1922.
After an appointment to The Submarine Depot Ship HMS VULCAN ‘for the requalifying Course for Submarine CO’s’, he was appointed to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Command of Submarines M1 and M2 in Reserve’ to date November 1924. M1 was lost with all hands on 12 November 1925, when the submarine was in collision with the Merchant Vessel SS VIDAR off Portland.
He was married to Cecily Carrie (née Lait), who lived at Lee on Solent, and whom he had married in the Parish Church in Frimley, Surrey, on 3 December 1924. He is commemorated on the family gravestone in the Eastern Cemetery at Highgate in London.
