Roy Clayton was born in Hallifax, Yorkshire, on 30 March 1926, the son of Ernest and Minnie Clayton (née Crowther). He attended the Haugh Shaw School and after leaving school he worked as a motor driver for Messrs. J E Jowett & Sons. He joined the Royal Navy in 1943 and trained as an Able Seaman and submariner.

He married Eleanor Elizabeth Garrett in Surrey in the 3rd Quarter of 1944. In August 1945 he was serving in HMS SEADEVIL in Malta. Roy Clayton is reported to have been drowned in Marsamxett Harbour in Malta on 21 August 1945, leaving a wife and a six week old daughter, Yvonne Ellen.  Roy Clayton is buried in the Royal Naval Cemetery at Malta in the Protestant (Men’s) Section in Plot F Grave 138.

ROLL OF HONOUR

Mr & Mrs E Clayton of 19, Vickerman Street have officially been notified that their younger son, AB Roy Clayton, was drowned on August 24 while serving on HM Submarine SEA DEVIL and that he was buried in the Royal Naval Cemetery, Malta. AB Clayton was 19 years of age and had been in the Navy for two and a half years. In civil life he was employed as a motor driver by Messrs. J E Jowett and Sons, and had attended Haugh Shaw School, Halifax. He leaves a widow and six week old daughter. His brother Ronald in a Warrant Officer in the RAF.
