Petty Officer Stoker George Dalton was among the early pioneers of Royal Navy submarine warfare, serving aboard H.M. Submarine D2 during the turbulent opening months of World War I. The D-class submarines were among the first designed for extended operations, and D2 was tasked with patrolling the dangerous waters of the North Sea, where enemy naval forces roamed.
On 1 December 1914, H.M. Submarine D2 was lost off the German-occupied coast of the Netherlands, reportedly rammed by a German patrol boat. The entire crew perished, marking another tragic chapter in the perilous duty of early submarine warfare.
Though his final resting place lies beneath the sea, Petty Officer Dalton’s name endures on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial alongside those of fellow submariners who risked everything in service of their country. His bravery and sacrifice are remembered.
