George Drew was the son of Charles and Jean Drew of Plas Wilmot, Oswestry, Shropshire. He was a cadet in HMS CONWAY. He served as Second Mate for the Eagle Oil Company in 1915. He joined the Royal Navy on 22 July 1916 as a Temporary Sub Lieutenant RNR and was appointed to HMS VIVID on the same day. He was promoted Acting Lieutenant on 6 September 1916 and was then appointed to to HMS ROSELIGHT on 13 October 1916.
On 15 February 1917 he was appointed to HMS HILARY which was sunk by U-88 on 25 May 1917. He was appointed to HMS MAIDSTONE on 10 June 1917, and to HMS ADAMANT ‘for Navigating Officer Submarine E-14’ on 1 September 1917. He was mentioned in Dispatches on 24 May 1919 ‘..for gallantry and devotion to duty on 28 January 1918 when HMS E14 was sunk in the Dardanelles’. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval War Memorial on Panel No 30.
