Pliny Foster was born at Halifax, Yorkshire on 27 November 1893, the son of Aquilla, a cotton spinner, and Elizabeth Foster. He was one of seven children and two half-siblings.  His service documents record a birth date of 27 November 1992.

He and another member of the crew drowned while attempting to escape from the wreck of HMS G11, aground at Howick, Northumberland. Pliny’s body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial Panel 28.

His brother Selwyn, a Private in the 7th Bn, Leicestershire Regiment was killed in action on 22 March 1918.
