Oliver Gaffney was originally from Willington, County Durham, the son of James William and Mary Ellen Gaffney of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

In 1944, he was serving in HMS SIRDAR which was on passage to Trincomalee in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and was on a stopover at Aden. Oliver Gaffney died in the RAF Hospital at Aden from a fractured vertebra/spinal cord injury – the result of a recreational diving accident.

Oliver Gaffney is buried in the Maala Cemetery in Yemen in Grave no F.101.
