He died on Thursday 12 February 1942 when he was ‘Officer of the Watch’ on the bridge whilst on patrol in the Mediterranean.  It is understood that an order was misunderstood and the submarine started to dive without warning.  Michael Gardner was washed over board and was lost.

He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Panel No. 62 Column No. 1 and there is a memorial to him in the church at Chertsey.
